Transistor is an ambitious work on which TNT, while grounded in its established melodic hard rock, added electronic tones and tight beats to take in the atmosphere of the late 1990s in its own way. The flair of the guitar and vocals remains, while the texture of the songs is arranged to be cooler and more modern. Tony Harnell’s singing is intact, and the power to deliver memorable choruses is not lost in the least within the changed sound. On “Just Like God,” “Wide Awake,” “Crashing Down” and “Because I Love You,” modern production and the band’s inherent melodic sense intersect, creating a fresh texture. While taking in experimental elements, the appeal of TNT-style songs is preserved, and a stance of seeking a balance between the trends of the time and its own identity is felt. It is a change that could divide longtime fans, but as proof of a band trying to move forward rather than stagnate, it holds a singular place in the career.
