『Nightlife』は、スコット・ゴーハムとブライアン・ロバートソンを迎えたTHIN LIZZYが、後の黄金期を支えるツイン・ギターの土台を作りながら、フィル・ライノットの叙情性を前面に押し出した第四作である。新しい二人のギターは、まだ常に派手なハーモニーを鳴らすわけではないが、柔らかな陰影と鋭い輪郭を曲に与え、ライノットの歌とベースが語る物語を豊かにする。『She Knows』や『Night Life』には都会的で夜更けのような空気が漂い、『Showdown』ではブルースの粘りがバンドの身体性を支える。 とりわけ『Still in Love with You』は、ライノットの痛みを抱えた歌と繊細な演奏が深く結び付く、THIN LIZZY屈指のバラードだ。『Sha La La』ではブライアン・ダウニーのドラムも躍動し、後に大きく花開くロックンロールの推進力が見える。アルバム全体は『Jailbreak』のような即効性よりも、空気、感情、曲間の余白を大切にしている。それゆえ初聴では控えめに感じられるかもしれないが、聴き込むほどに、メロディの美しさとメンバー交代によって生まれた新しい会話が浮かび上がる。THIN LIZZYが人間味とハード・ロックをどう結び付けるか、その答えを静かに深めた重要な一枚である。

Nightlife is Thin Lizzy’s fourth album and the point at which Scott Gorham and Brian Robertson begin building the twin-guitar foundation of the band’s later golden era, while Phil Lynott’s lyrical side moves clearly to the front. The two new guitarists do not yet rely on constant flashy harmony, but they add soft shading and sharp outlines to the stories Lynott tells through his vocal and bass. “She Knows” and “Night Life” carry an urban, after-hours mood, while “Showdown” lets a bluesy pull support the group’s physical groove. Above all, “Still in Love with You” unites Lynott’s wounded vocal with delicate playing in one of Thin Lizzy’s finest ballads. “Sha La La” gives Brian Downey’s drums a chance to surge and points toward the rock-and-roll drive that would bloom later. The album values atmosphere, emotion, and space between the songs more than the immediate impact of Jailbreak. It can therefore seem restrained at first, but repeated listening reveals its melodic beauty and the new musical conversation created by the lineup change. Nightlife is a crucial, quietly deep record about how Thin Lizzy joined human feeling to hard rock.
