Liner Notes
Nightlife is Thin Lizzy’s fourth album and the point at which Scott Gorham and Brian Robertson begin building the twin-guitar foundation of the band’s later golden era, while Phil Lynott’s lyrical side moves clearly to the front. The two new guitarists do not yet rely on constant flashy harmony, but they add soft shading and sharp outlines to the stories Lynott tells through his vocal and bass. “She Knows” and “Night Life” carry an urban, after-hours mood, while “Showdown” lets a bluesy pull support the group’s physical groove. Above all, “Still in Love with You” unites Lynott’s wounded vocal with delicate playing in one of Thin Lizzy’s finest ballads.
“Sha La La” gives Brian Downey’s drums a chance to surge and points toward the rock-and-roll drive that would bloom later. The album values atmosphere, emotion, and space between the songs more than the immediate impact of Jailbreak. It can therefore seem restrained at first, but repeated listening reveals its melodic beauty and the new musical conversation created by the lineup change. Nightlife is a crucial, quietly deep record about how Thin Lizzy joined human feeling to hard rock.
