Tour de Force

『Tour de Force』は、THE POODLESが力強いヴォーカル、躍動するギター、覚えやすいコーラスを通して、スウェーデン産メロディック・ハード・ロックの魅力を濃く描いた2013年5月発表の第5作だ。前作『Performocracy』の手応えから編成をそのまま維持し、同年2月から録音に入っている。レーベルは引き続きフロンティアーズ。曲はポップな親しみやすさを持ちながら、リズムとリフにはしっかりとしたメタルの押し出しがあり、ギター・ソロも惜しみなく入る。 冒頭の“Misery Loves Company”から“Shut Up!”へ続く勢いは途切れず、“Viva Democracy”と“40 Days and 40 Nights”はアリーナ級のアンセムだ。テンポが落ちるのは唯一のバラード“Leaving the Past to Pass”のみで、あとは“Godspeed”“Now Is the Time”と最後まで押し切る。前進感のあるナンバーと感情を深く聴かせる曲をバランス良く置き、アルバム全体を飽きさせない。フィジカル盤には母国語で歌われる“En För Alla För En”が加わる。爽快で力強いメロディを求める時に効く一枚だ。

Tour de Force, released in May 2013, is the fifth album, on which The Poodles drew Swedish melodic hard rock's appeal in strong colour through powerful vocals, springing guitar and choruses you remember. Encouraged by the previous album, they kept the line-up intact and began recording that February, again for Frontiers. The songs are approachably pop while the rhythms and riffs keep a firm metal push, and the guitar solos are not rationed. The momentum from the opening “Misery Loves Company” into “Shut Up!” never breaks, and “Viva Democracy” and “40 Days and 40 Nights” are arena-scale anthems. The tempo drops only for the sole ballad, “Leaving the Past to Pass”; otherwise “Godspeed” and “Now Is the Time” carry it through to the end. Forward-driving numbers and songs of deeper feeling are placed in good balance, so the album never sags. The physical edition adds “En För Alla För En,” sung in their own language. The record to reach for when you want bracing, powerful melody.
