Devil in the Details

『Devil in the Details』は、THE POODLESがキャッチーなコーラス、艶のあるヴォーカル、整ったギター・アレンジを用いて、洗練されたメロディック・ロックを鳴らした2015年3月24日発表の第6作だ。ここからスウェーデンのゲイン・ミュージックとの新たな協業が始まる。ベースにはヨハン・フロードクヴィストを迎えた。曲はハード・ロックの輪郭を保ちながら、ポップな歌心を大胆に前へ出す。 先行シングルは1月19日に公開された“The Greatest”。冒頭の“Before I Die”から“House of Cards”へ続く流れは明快で、“Crack in the Wall”“Everything”“Life Without You”と、粒の揃った12曲が並ぶ。終盤の“Creator and Breaker”“Borderline”まで水準は落ちない。明るい曲でも、コードや歌の運びには少しの切なさがあり、アルバム全体を大人びた表情にしている。ポップに過ぎるという批判もあったが、そもそもこのバンドはポップ・メタルでもヘヴィ・メタルでもハード・ロックでもある。過度に重くならず、しかし軽くもない。その絶妙なバランスが、北欧メロディック・ロックの魅力としてしっかり伝わる一枚だ。

Devil in the Details, released on 24 March 2015, is the sixth album, on which The Poodles sounded polished melodic rock through catchy choruses, glossy vocals and neat guitar arrangements. A new collaboration with the Swedish label Gain Music begins here, with Johan Flodqvist brought in on bass. The songs hold hard rock's outline while pushing pop melodic feeling boldly forward. The advance single was “The Greatest,” released on 19 January. The run from the opening “Before I Die” into “House of Cards” is clear, and twelve evenly matched songs follow through “Crack in the Wall,” “Everything” and “Life Without You,” with no drop in standard before the closing “Creator and Breaker” and “Borderline.” Even in the bright songs there is a little ache in the chords and the vocal phrasing, which gives the album a grown-up cast. Some called it too pop — but this band has always been pop metal and heavy metal and hard rock at once. Never too heavy, never too light: that fine balance is exactly the appeal of Nordic melodic rock.
