Ceremony

『Ceremony』は、THE CULTがビリー・ダフィーの太いギターとイアン・アストベリーの深い声を中心に、より長く陰影の濃い曲世界を作り上げた第5作だ。ハード・ロックの推進力は残るが、曲は即効性だけでなく、反復するリフや広い空間で緊張を積み上げている。前作の成功を経て、バンドはより深みのある表現を志向した。 “Wild Hearted Son”の直接性と“Heart of Soul”の哀感の間に、バンドの異なる表情が見える。“Ceremony”“White”“Sweet Salvation”といった楽曲にも、バンドの充実した演奏が息づいている。“Earth Mofo”“Full Tilt”“Indian”“Wonderland”のような楽曲にも、バンドの多彩な魅力が息づいている。この時期を最後にオリジナル・メンバーの一部が離れるなどバンドは転換期を迎えていたが、それでもイアン・アストベリーとビリー・ダフィーを軸に、バンド独自の壮大な世界観は健在である。ネイティヴ・アメリカンへの傾倒を反映したイメージも、作品全体に色濃く表れている。壮大さと不穏さが同居する本作は、90年代初頭のTHE CULTを象徴する一枚である。

Ceremony is the fifth album on which THE CULT, centered on Billy Duffy’s thick guitar and Ian Astbury’s deep voice, built a longer, more shadowed song world. Hard-rock drive remains, but the songs build tension not only through immediacy but through repeating riffs and wide space. After the previous album’s success, the band aimed for a deeper expression. Between the directness of “Wild Hearted Son” and the melancholy of “Heart of Soul,” the band’s different faces appear. Songs like “Ceremony,” “White” and “Sweet Salvation” breathe the band’s full playing too. Imagery reflecting a leaning toward Native American culture also appears strongly across the work. With grandeur and unease coexisting, it is a record emblematic of THE CULT in the early 1990s.
