Demonic

『Demonic』は、TESTAMENTが、従来のスラッシュ的な、あの切れ味を残しつつも、より低く、遅く、そして重い圧力を、前面に押し出した、異色の第7作だ。当時、隆盛を極めていた、デス・メタルの影響を、色濃く受けており、バンドのカタログの中でも、際立って暗く、攻撃的な作風となっている。チャック・ビリーの声は、深く低く唸り、リフは、短く鋭い反復で、まるで曲を押し潰すかのように、力強く進んでいく。 冒頭“Demonic Refusal”の攻撃性、そして“The Burning Times”のドラマ性、さらに“John Doe”のような曲まで、収録曲は、いずれも聴き応えがある。“Together as One”“Distorted Lives”のような曲も、作品の充実を伝えている。その攻撃性の質は、もはや、単なるスピードにあるのではなく、あくまで、圧倒的な重量と、不穏さとにある。全体に、暗く儀式的な空気が、色濃く漂っている。 バンドの、ヘヴィで、実験的な側面を、これ以上なく強烈に刻んだ、異色ながらも、極めて強烈な一枚だ。従来のTESTAMENTのイメージとは、大きく異なるため、賛否は分かれるかもしれないが、その挑戦的な姿勢は、高く評価されている。バンドの、最も暗い表情を持つ、力強く聴き応えのある問題作と言える。バンドの振り幅を示す一枚だ。

Demonic is a distinctive seventh album on which Testament, while keeping its former thrash edge, foregrounds a lower, slower, heavier pressure. Strongly influenced by death metal, then at its height, it has a distinctly dark, aggressive style even in the band’s catalog. Chuck Billy’s voice growls deep and low, and the riffs proceed powerfully with short, sharp repetition as if crushing the songs. From the aggression of the opener “Demonic Refusal” and the drama of “The Burning Times” to a cut like “John Doe,” every song is engaging, while cuts like “Together as One” and “Distorted Lives” convey the work’s fullness. The quality of its aggression lies no longer in mere speed but in overwhelming weight and unease. A dark, ritual air strongly hangs over the whole. A distinctive yet extremely intense record that inscribes the band’s heavy, experimental side as intensely as possible. As it differs greatly from the former Testament image, opinions may divide, yet its challenging stance is highly praised. A powerful, engaging, controversial work holding the band’s darkest face — a record showing the band’s range.
