The Gathering

『The Gathering』は、TESTAMENTが、鋭いスラッシュ・リフに、低く重い音像を重ね合わせ、極めて攻撃的なメタルへと、力強く踏み込んだ、後期を代表する傑作だ。ドラムに、あのジーン・ホグランを、ベースに、スティーヴ・ディジョルジオを迎えた、鉄壁のラインナップで制作されており、その演奏の破壊力は、凄まじい。楽曲は、複雑に動いていくが、その中心には、決して止まらない、リズムの圧倒的な圧力と、噛み付くようなヴォーカルとがある。 冒頭を飾る、あまりにも強烈な名曲“D.N.R. (Do Not Resuscitate)”の圧倒的な破壊力、そして“Down for Life”の攻撃性、さらに“Eyes of Wrath”のような曲まで、収録曲は、いずれも聴き応えがある。“Riding the Snake”“3 Days in Darkness”のような曲も、作品の充実を伝えている。技巧の見せ場も、随所に多いものの、このアルバムの、強烈な印象を決定づけるのは、あくまで、その生々しく、圧倒的な破壊力である。 前作『Demonic』での、暗く重い方向性を、より洗練された形で、スラッシュの、あの速度感と、見事に融合させた、極めて完成度の高い一枚だ。バンドの、ヘヴィな側面を、これ以上なく強烈に刻んだ、後期の、極めて重要な傑作と言える。ジーン・ホグランの、超人的なドラミングも、必聴だ。バンドの底力を示す、力強い一枚だ。

The Gathering is a late-representative masterpiece on which Testament, layering a low, heavy sound onto sharp thrash riffs, powerfully steps into extremely aggressive metal. Made in an ironclad lineup welcoming the mighty Gene Hoglan on drums and Steve DiGiorgio on bass, its playing’s destructive power is tremendous. The songs move complexly, yet at their center are the never-stopping, overwhelming pressure of the rhythm and biting vocals. From the overwhelming destructive power of the all-too-intense opening classic “D.N.R. (Do Not Resuscitate)” and the aggression of “Down for Life” to a cut like “Eyes of Wrath,” every song is engaging, while cuts like “Riding the Snake” and “3 Days in Darkness” convey the work’s fullness. Though technical showcases are abundant in places, what determines this album’s intense impression is purely its raw, overwhelming destructive power. An extremely polished record that beautifully fused the dark, heavy direction of the previous Demonic, in a more refined form, with thrash’s speed. A late, extremely important masterpiece that inscribes the band’s heavy side as intensely as possible. Gene Hoglan’s superhuman drumming is also essential listening. A powerful record showing the band’s underlying strength.
