『Underworld』は、SYMPHONY Xがダンテの『神曲 地獄篇』やオルフェウスの神話に着想を得た第9作だ。ラッセル・アレン(ヴォーカル)、マイケル・ロメオ(ギター)、マイケル・ピネラ(キーボード)、マイケル・レポンド(ベース)、ジェイソン・ルーロ(ドラム)という黄金編成で制作され、ロメオがプロデュースを手掛けた。プログレッシヴ・メタルの複雑なリズムと、ヘヴィ・メタルらしい重いリフを、劇的な歌メロディへ結び付けている。 “Nevermore”“Without You”では、ダークな雰囲気、重いグルーヴ、壮大なコーラスが重なり、強い物語性が生まれている。技巧的な演奏は豊富でも、音楽は冷たくなり過ぎず、ヴォーカルと印象的なフレーズが常に聴き手を導く。約9分の“To Hell and Back”のような大作から簡潔な楽曲まで、振れ幅の大きい構成が一枚にまとまっている。“Charon”“Legend”のような楽曲では、荘厳な鍵盤と重いリフ、アレンの熱唱が緊密に絡み合う。デス・メタル的な激しさを覗かせる場面もあり、バンドの表現の幅の広さがうかがえる。構成の妙と力強い歌を同時に楽しめる、円熟したバンドの充実作である。

Underworld is the ninth album, inspired by Dante's Inferno and the myth of Orpheus. It was made with the golden lineup of Russell Allen (vocals), Michael Romeo (guitar), Michael Pinnella (keyboards), Michael LePond (bass) and Jason Rullo (drums), with Romeo producing. It links the complex rhythms of progressive metal and the heavy riffs of heavy metal to dramatic vocal melody. On "Nevermore" and "Without You," a dark atmosphere, heavy groove and grand choruses layer, creating strong narrative. Though technical playing is abundant, the music does not become too cold, and the vocals and striking phrases always guide the listener. From epics like the roughly nine-minute "To Hell and Back" to concise songs, a construction of large range comes together on one album. A fulfilling work by a mature band that lets you enjoy the mastery of construction and powerful singing at once.
