Emotional Fire

『Emotional Fire』は、SUNSTORMがジョー・リン・ターナーの円熟したヴォーカルを中心に、洗練されたキーボード、メロディアスなギター、上質なコーラスを組み合わせたAOR/メロディック・ロック作品だ。2012年2月にフロンティアーズから発表された第3作。過去2作が彼の書いた曲を掘り起こしたのに対し、本作は彼が80年代にバック・ヴォーカルとして参加した楽曲に光を当てるという趣向である。ここではかつて脇役だった声が、そのまま主役の座に着くことになる。 表題曲と“You Wouldn't Know Love”はマイケル・ボルトン、デズモンド・チャイルド、ダイアン・ウォーレンの共作でシェールが録音した曲、“Gina”はボルトン自身のレパートリーだ。曲はなめらかに流れるが、“Never Give Up”や“The Higher You Rise”のサビにはしっかりとロックの推進力がある。デニス・ウォードのプロデュースのもと、都会的な洗練と80年代型メロディの温かさが同居し、歌の魅力を最大限に引き出すアレンジが続く。締めのバラード“All I Am”まで、大人のメロディック・ロックを味わいたい時にぴったりの一枚だ。

Emotional Fire is an AOR/melodic rock record combining refined keyboards, melodic guitar and quality choruses around Joe Lynn Turner's mature vocals. The third album, released on Frontiers in February 2012. Where the previous two dug up songs he wrote, this one shines a light on tracks he sang background vocals on in the '80s — the voice once in a supporting role now takes the lead. The title track and “You Wouldn't Know Love” were written by Michael Bolton, Desmond Child and Diane Warren and recorded by Cher; “Gina” is from Bolton's own repertoire. The songs flow smoothly, yet the choruses of “Never Give Up” and “The Higher You Rise” have real rock drive. Under Dennis Ward's production, urbane polish and the warmth of '80s-style melody coexist, with arrangements that draw out the singing's appeal to the fullest. Through to the closing ballad “All I Am,” it's just right for when you want grown-up melodic rock.
