Edge of Tomorrow

『Edge of Tomorrow』は、SUNSTORMが滑らかなAORの感触と、硬いギターを持つメロディック・メタルを丁寧に結び付けた第4作だ。2016年5月にフロンティアーズから発表された。ターナーが並行して進めたレイテッドXの硬質さを残しつつメロディへ戻りたいと考え、アレッサンドロ・デル・ヴェッキオにプロデュースと作曲を依頼したことから生まれた。DGMのシモーネ・ムラローニ(ギター)、ニック・マッツコーニ(ベース)、フランチェスコ・ヨヴィーノ(ドラム)という新編成で、ヨヴィーノの参加は本作のみである。前作から4年、バンドの布陣は完全に入れ替わった。 情感のあるヴォーカル、厚いコーラス、鍵盤の彩りが、曲に大人びた華やかさを与える。メロディは親しみやすいが、サウンドには十分な力強さがあり、ターナー自身は「メロディック・メタルと呼びたい」と語った。先行シングル“The Sound of Goodbye”や表題曲から締めの“Burning Fire”まで、バラードの繊細さとアップテンポ曲の高揚を自然に行き来し、アルバム全体が流れるように進む。洗練された歌ものロックをじっくり味わいたい人に向く充実の一枚だ。

Edge of Tomorrow is the fourth album, carefully binding a smooth AOR feel to melodic metal with hard guitar. Released on Frontiers in May 2016. It came about because Turner wanted to return to melody while keeping the hardness of his parallel project Rated X, so he asked Alessandro Del Vecchio for production and songwriting. The new lineup has DGM's Simone Mularoni (guitar), Nik Mazzucconi (bass) and Francesco Jovino (drums) — Jovino appears only on this album. Four years on from the last record, the band's personnel had turned over completely. Emotive vocals, thick choruses and keyboard color give the songs a grown-up brilliance. The melodies are approachable but the sound has ample force; Turner himself said he'd call it melodic metal. From the advance single “The Sound of Goodbye” and the title track to the closing “Burning Fire,” it moves naturally between ballad delicacy and up-tempo lift, and the album flows as a whole — a satisfying record for savoring refined vocal-led rock.
