『Polaris』は、STRATOVARIUSが、新たな体制でパワー・メタルの核心へと力強く立ち返りつつ、再出発の清々しい空気を、鮮やかに刻んだ復活作だ。長年バンドを支えた創設者ティモ・トルキの脱退という、大きな危機を乗り越え、新ギタリストにマティアス・クピアイネンを迎えて制作された。流麗なキーボード、速く伸びるギター、そして空へと抜けるような歌メロが、希望と、心地よい緊張感とを、同時に力強く運んでいく。 冒頭“Deep Unknown”の力強い疾走感、叙情的な“Winter Skies”、そして“Falling Star”“King of Nothing”“Higher We Go”のような曲まで、収録曲はいずれも、バンドの完全復活を告げる、明るく力強いエネルギーに満ちている。曲ごとに、確かなドラマ性があり、聴き応えは十分だ。 バンドが抱えていた、大きな変化そのものを、後ろ向きな停滞ではなく、むしろ力強い、前向きなエネルギーへと、見事に変えてみせた点に、本作の大きな意義がある。伝統的なメロディック・パワー・メタルの様式を、忠実に守りながらも、新しい章の、清々しい始まりを、はっきりと感じさせる一枚だ。困難を乗り越えたバンドの、力強い意志がみなぎる、感動的な復活作と言える。

Polaris is a comeback record on which Stratovarius, powerfully returning to the core of power metal with a new lineup, vividly inscribes the fresh air of a restart. Made after overcoming the great crisis of the departure of founder Timo Tolkki, who had long supported the band, and welcoming the new guitarist Matias Kupiainen. Fluid keyboards, fast, soaring guitar and a sky-piercing vocal melody powerfully carry hope and a pleasant tension at once. From the powerful speed of the opener “Deep Unknown” and the lyrical “Winter Skies” to cuts like “Falling Star,” “King of Nothing” and “Higher We Go,” every song is full of bright, powerful energy announcing the band’s full revival. Each song has sure drama and is amply engaging. Its great significance lies in beautifully turning the great change the band faced into powerful, forward-looking energy, rather than backward stagnation. While faithfully keeping the traditional melodic-power-metal style, it is a record that clearly conveys a fresh beginning of a new chapter. A moving comeback filled with the powerful will of a band that overcame difficulty.
