Heavy Metal Rules

『Heavy Metal Rules』は、STEEL PANTHERが80年代グラム・メタルへの愛、過剰なユーモア、そして意外なほど確かな演奏力をそのまま前に出した第5作だ。2019年に発表され、ジェイ・アシュトンがプロデュースを担当した。高音ヴォーカル、ツイン・ギター風のフレーズ、派手なコーラスが、あえて大げさなロックの快楽を作る。全10曲とコンパクトにまとまっている点も、それまでの作品とはやや異なるところである。 歌詞の挑発的な笑いは相変わらず好みを選ぶが、曲の作りは真剣で、リフやソロには当時の様式への深い理解がある。表題曲はバンドの信条をそのまま掲げたアンセムで、ライヴでの求心力も非常に高い一曲だ。冒頭の“Zebraman”から“Let's Get High Tonight”“I'm Not Your Bitch”を経て、締めの“I Ain't Buying What You're Selling”まで、無駄な曲はない。なお2021年にはベースのレキシー・フォックスが脱退し、バンドは公開オーディションで後任を探すことになる。パロディとしてだけでなく、メロディックなハード・ロックとしても楽しめる、遠慮のない一枚だ。

Heavy Metal Rules is the fifth album, putting Steel Panther's love of 1980s glam metal, excessive humour and unexpectedly certain playing straight to the front. Released in 2019 and produced by Jay Ashton. High vocals, twin-guitar-style phrasing and flashy choruses build a deliberately overblown rock pleasure. At ten tracks it's more compact than what came before — one respect in which it differs. The provocative humour in the lyrics still chooses its listener, but the songwriting is serious, and the riffs and solos show a deep understanding of the era's form. The title track is an anthem that simply states the band's creed, and it has real pulling power live. From the opener “Zebraman” through “Let's Get High Tonight” and “I'm Not Your Bitch” to the closing “I Ain't Buying What You're Selling,” there's no filler. In 2021 bassist Lexxi Foxx would leave, and the band would hold open auditions for a replacement. Enjoyable not only as parody but as melodic hard rock — an unapologetic record.
