『On the Prowl』は、STEEL PANTHERが愛する80年代グラム・メタルの定型を、徹底的なユーモアと本気の演奏で鳴らした第6作だ。2023年に発表された。レキシー・フォックスの脱退後、公開オーディションを経て新体制で臨んだ作品である。派手なギター、分厚いハーモニー、キャッチーなコーラス、そして誇張された物語。そのすべてが様式美として機能し、笑いと高揚が同時に立ち上がる仕掛けになっている。 ただし、冗談だけで成立しているわけではない。リフは太く、ソロは滑らかで、リズムはきちんと曲を前へ運ぶ。冒頭の“Never Too Late (To Get Some Pussy Tonight)”から“Friends with Benefits”を経て、締めの“Sleeping on the Rollaway”まで13曲。なかでも“1987”のように、彼らが理想とする時代そのものを主題にした曲には、紛れもない愛情がある。グラム・メタルの楽しさを知り尽くしているからこそ、パロディと愛情の境目を軽々と越えていく。下ネタ一辺倒の歌詞に食傷する向きもあるだろうが、演奏の水準は一貫して高い。派手なロックンロールを無条件に楽しむための一枚である。

On the Prowl is the sixth album, on which Steel Panther sounded the template of the 1980s glam metal they love with thoroughgoing humour and serious playing. Released in 2023. It's the record they made with a new line-up after Lexxi Foxx's departure and the open auditions that followed. Flashy guitar, thick harmony, catchy choruses and exaggerated storytelling: all of it functions as formal beauty, rigged so that laughter and elation rise at the same time. That said, it doesn't run on jokes alone. The riffs are thick, the solos smooth, and the rhythm carries the songs properly forward. Thirteen tracks, from the opener through to the closing “Sleeping on the Rollaway.” In particular, songs like “1987” — which take the era they idealize as their very subject — carry unmistakable affection. Because they know glam metal's pleasures inside out, they cross the line between parody and love with ease. Some will tire of the relentlessly smutty lyrics, but the standard of the playing is consistently high. A record for enjoying flashy rock 'n' roll unconditionally.
