『The Chainheart Machine』は、SOILWORKが刻むリフとシンセの質感を組み合わせ、無機質で未来的な空気を生み出した第2作だ。ビョーン・“スピード”・ストリッドの激しい声は、曲の速さと攻撃性をさらに前へと押し出している。デビュー作の勢いを受け継ぎながら、バンドはより緻密で個性的なサウンドへと踏み出している。 “The Chainheart Machine”“Bulletbeast”“Millionflame”“Machine Gun Majesty”といった楽曲では、冷たさの中に大きなフックが巧みに置かれている。“Neon Rebels”“Spirits Of The Future Sun”のような楽曲にも、バンドの疾走感と攻撃性が息づいている。“Generation Speedkill”“Possessing The Angels”“Room N 99”のような楽曲にも、疾走感と攻撃性が息づいている。タイトルが示すような機械的で冷たいイメージは当時のバンドの音楽性をよく表しており、ストリッドの激しいヴォーカルもいっそう存在感を増した、初期SOILWORKの充実を示す一枚だ。硬質で機械的な質感の中に、確かなメロディ感覚が同居しているのが本作の魅力だ。後のモダン・メタルへとつながる設計がすでに見て取れる、意欲的な一枚である。

The Chainheart Machine is the second album on which SOILWORK combined chugging riffs and synth textures to create an inorganic, futuristic air. Björn “Speed” Strid’s fierce voice pushes the songs’ speed and aggression further forward. Inheriting the debut’s momentum, the band steps toward a more detailed, distinctive sound. On “The Chainheart Machine,” “Bulletbeast,” “Millionflame” and “Machine Gun Majesty,” big hooks are skillfully placed within the coldness. Songs like “Neon Rebels” and “Spirits Of The Future Sun” breathe the band’s drive and aggression too. The appeal of this record is that a firm melodic sense coexists within the hard, mechanical texture. An ambitious record on which the design leading to later modern metal can already be seen.
