『Steelbath Suicide』は、SOILWORKが高速のリフ、荒々しいヴォーカル、攻撃的なリズムを前面に押し出したデビュー作だ。音は粗く激しいが、ギターにはすでにメロディへと向かう感覚が確かに宿っている。イェーテボリ発のメロディック・デス・メタルの潮流を受け継ぎながら、若きバンドはその衝動を全力でぶつけている。 “Steelbath Suicide”“Sadistic Lullabye”“Wings Of Domain”“Razorlives”といった楽曲では、短い曲でも展開を作り、ただ速く演奏するだけでは終わらない構成力を見せている。“My Need”“Demon In Veins”のような楽曲にも、バンドの初期衝動が強く刻まれている。“Entering The Angel Diabolique”“Skin After Skin”“In A Close Encounter”のような楽曲にも、初期らしい荒々しさが息づいている。デビュー作ながらヨーロッパのメタル・シーンで一定の注目を集め、後に世界的な人気を得るバンドの確かな原点がここにある。ビョーン・“スピード”・ストリッドの激しいヴォーカルが、曲の攻撃性を前へと押し出している。荒削りながらも切れ味の鋭い本作は、その後の大きな飛躍を予感させる、力強いデビュー作である。

Steelbath Suicide is the debut on which SOILWORK pushed high-speed riffs, raw vocals and aggressive rhythm to the front. The sound is rough and fierce, yet the guitar already firmly holds a sense heading toward melody. Inheriting the current of Gothenburg-born melodic death metal, the young band throws that impulse in with full force. On “Steelbath Suicide,” “Sadistic Lullabye,” “Wings Of Domain” and “Razorlives,” even short songs create development, showing a constructive skill that does not end in mere fast playing. Songs like “My Need” and “Demon In Veins” strongly carve the band’s early impulse too. Björn “Speed” Strid’s fierce vocals push the songs’ aggression forward. Rough yet sharp, it is a powerful debut that foreshadows the great later leap.
