World on Fire

『World on Fire』は、SLASHが太いギター・リフ、ブルージーなリード、骨太のロックンロールを大きなスケールで展開した第3作だ。2014年に発表され、マイケル・バスケットがプロデュースを担当した。全17曲・77分という、多くの二枚組を上回る大作である。本作ではスラッシュがすべてのギターを一人で弾いた。前作の手応えをそのまま量へ振り切ったような、勢い任せの豪腕ぶりが痛快な一枚である。バスケットとの関係は、ここから長く続いていくことになる。編成は前作から変わっていない。 ギターは単なるソロの見せ場に留まらず、曲の景色と速度を決める中心として働く。ストレートなハード・ロックから陰りを帯びたナンバーまで振れ幅はあるが、どの曲にも弾き手の個性が明確に刻まれている。表題曲や“Shadow Life”の勢い、“Bent to Fly”の陰影、“Avalon”“Battleground”“Dirty Girl”といった終盤の充実まで、聴きどころは尽きない。曲数の多さゆえに一気に通すのは骨が折れるが、その分だけ発見も多い作品といえるだろう。リフとメロディが対等に前へ出る、ギター・ロックの醍醐味を存分に味わえる一枚である。

World on Fire is the third album, on which Slash unfolded thick guitar riffs, bluesy leads and sturdy rock 'n' roll on a large scale. Released in 2014 and produced by Michael Baskette. At seventeen tracks and 77 minutes it's a big record — longer than many double albums. Slash played all the guitars himself here. It's a bracing listen, as if the confidence of the previous record had been pushed straight into sheer volume. The relationship with Baskette would continue from here. The line-up is unchanged from the last album. The guitar doesn't stop at being a showcase for solos; it works as the center that sets each song's scenery and speed. The range runs from straight hard rock to shadowed numbers, but the player's personality is clearly stamped on every track. From the drive of the title track and “Shadow Life,” the shading of “Bent to Fly,” to the late-album richness of “Avalon,” “Battleground” and “Dirty Girl,” there's no shortage of highlights. The sheer number of songs makes a single sitting hard work, but there's that much more to discover. A record where riff and melody come forward as equals — guitar rock at its most enjoyable.
