The Art of Balance

『The Art of Balance』は、SHADOWS FALLがスラッシュ・メタルの鋭いリフ、メロディックなリード、ハードコア由来の爆発力を緻密にまとめた第3作だ。2002年9月にセンチュリー・メディアから発表。前年にデイヴィッド・ジャーメインが去り、元スティグマタのジェイソン・ビットナーが加入した最初の作品で、以後長く続く布陣がここで固まった。ヨーテボリ系との比較を脱するため、スラッシュやハード・ロックの要素を意識的に取り込んでいる。プロデュースはゼウス。 ブルータルな部分と叙情的な部分の切り替えが自然で、曲ごとのドラマがはっきりしている。冒頭の“Idle Hands”から“Thoughts Without Words”“Destroyer of Senses”“The Idiot Box”がヴィデオになり、締めにはピンク・フロイドの“Welcome to the Machine”のカヴァーを配した。バンド全員が作曲に関わった最初の作品でもあり、独立系アルバム・チャートで15位を記録している。速さだけでなく、静かな導入や広がるメロディが作品に陰影を与える。激しさと構成美を両方求める人に向いた、バンドの重要作だ。

The Art of Balance is the third album, tightly assembling thrash metal's sharp riffs, melodic leads and hardcore-derived explosiveness. Released on Century Media in September 2002. After David Germain left the previous year, ex-Stigmata drummer Jason Bittner joined for his first album here, and the long-running lineup locked in from this point. To escape constant Gothenburg comparisons, they deliberately drew in thrash and hard rock elements. Produced by Zeuss. The switching between brutal and lyrical passages is natural, and each song's drama is distinct. From the opener “Idle Hands,” videos were made for “Thoughts Without Words,” “Destroyer of Senses” and “The Idiot Box,” and a cover of Pink Floyd's “Welcome to the Machine” closes the record. It was also the first album the entire lineup wrote for, reaching No. 15 on the independent albums chart. Beyond speed, quiet intros and expansive melody give the record shadow — a key work for those who want both aggression and structural beauty.
