Of One Blood

『Of One Blood』は、SHADOWS FALLがツイン・ギターの旋律と荒いヴォーカルを交差させ、曲に常に緊張を与えた第2作だ。2000年4月、センチュリー・メディアからの初作品として発表された。フィル・ラボンテに代わり、ボストンのメタルコア先駆者オーヴァーキャストのブライアン・フェアがヴォーカルに加入。アルコール依存で翌年脱退するデイヴィッド・ジャーメインが叩く最後の作品でもある。1999年にプラネットZスタジオで録音され、プロデュースはゼウスが手がけた。レイ・ミショーがキーボードで色を添えている。 リズムは重く、ブレイクダウンにも流れを止めない推進力がある。短い序奏“Pain Glass Vision”から“Crushing Belial”へ雪崩れ込み、デビュー作の“Fleshold”“Revel in My Loss”“To Ashes”を新体制で録り直した曲も並ぶ。フェアの咆哮とバカンドのクリーンな歌が対比を生み、ジャンル横断的な要素を勢いのある曲作りへまとめた。緻密なギター・ハーモニーとスラッシュの精度が同居し、締めの“Serenity”まで密度が落ちない。バンドの後の飛躍を予感させる一枚だ。

Of One Blood is the second album, crossing twin-guitar melody with raw vocals to keep constant tension in the songs. Released in April 2000 as their first for Century Media. Replacing Phil Labonte, Brian Fair of Boston metalcore pioneers Overcast joined on vocals. It's also the last album with David Germain, who left the next year over alcoholism. Recorded in 1999 at Planet Z Studios and produced by Zeuss, with Ray Michaud adding keyboard color. The rhythm is heavy, and even the breakdowns have a drive that never stops the flow. The short intro “Pain Glass Vision” tumbles into “Crushing Belial,” and re-recordings of the debut's “Fleshold,” “Revel in My Loss” and “To Ashes” sit alongside. Fair's roars and Bachand's clean singing create contrast, pulling genre-crossing elements into propulsive songwriting. Intricate guitar harmony and thrash precision coexist, and the density never drops through the closing “Serenity” — a record that hints at the leap to come.
