The Cold White Light

『The Cold White Light』は、冷たい美しさと深い哀感で、SENTENCEDがゴシック・メタルの陰影を描いた第7作だ。ロパッカとテンクラのギター・デュオが織りなす精緻な旋律が、荒涼とした情景に銀色の輝きを与えている。プロデュースは前作に続きヒーリ・ヒーレスマーが担当した。多くのファンや批評家から、バンドの最高傑作と評される一枚である。本作はフィンランドのチャートで1位を獲得した。ライヒアラの歌声はここで、より深く沈んだバリトンへと成熟している。 フィンランド語の序曲“Konevitsan Kirkonkellot”から幕を開け、“Cross My Heart and Hope to Die”“Neverlasting”まで、絶望と孤独を湛えた楽曲が並ぶ。ライヒアラの深く沈んだ歌声が、喪失や孤立をこの上なく切実に描き出す。冷厳で内省的な音像が全編を包む、円熟の極みにある一枚である。ロパッカによる詩情豊かな歌詞と、テンクラの旋律とが分かちがたく結びついている。派手さを排して静かに深く沈み込んでいくその作風は、SENTENCEDというバンドの本質を最も純粋に映し出した到達点だ。

The Cold White Light is Sentenced's seventh album, on which they depicted the shading of gothic metal with cold beauty and deep sorrow. The intricate melodies woven by the guitar duo of Lopakka and Tenkula give a silver sheen to a desolate scene. Production was handled by Hiili Hiilesmaa, following the previous album. It is regarded by many fans and critics as the band's masterpiece. The album reached No. 1 on the Finnish charts. Here Laihiala's voice matures into a deeper, more sunken baritone. Opening with the Finnish overture "Konevitsan Kirkonkellot," songs steeped in despair and solitude line up, from "Cross My Heart and Hope to Die" to "Neverlasting." Laihiala's deep, sunken voice depicts loss and isolation with the utmost urgency. A record at the height of maturity, wrapped in a cold, introspective sound. Lopakka's poetic lyrics and Tenkula's melodies are bound inseparably together. Eschewing flash and sinking quietly and deeply, its approach reflects the very essence of Sentenced in its purest form.
