Frozen

『Frozen』は、冷たいギターの質感と沈んだメロディで、SENTENCEDがゴシックな陰影を深めた第5作だ。前作『Down』で確立したゴシック・メタルの路線を、より精緻に磨き上げている。ライヒアラとクッコホヴィが正式メンバーとして作曲にも加わり、バンドの結束が一段と高まった時期の作品でもある。 “Kaamos”と名付けられたインストゥルメンタルの序曲から幕を開け、“Farewell”“Mourn”まで、凍てついた哀愁が全編を貫く。“The Suicider”にはビデオも制作された。序曲の題“Kaamos”は、北極圏で太陽が昇らない極夜を意味するフィンランド語だ。バンドの拠点である北欧の厳しい冬の情景が、音にそのまま刻み込まれている。プロデュースは再びヴァルデマー・ソリシュタが手掛け、ドイツのWoodhouse Studiosで録音された。北欧の冬のような、冷厳で美しいメランコリック・メタルの充実作である。前作で提示した方程式を、より無駄なく洗練させた一枚といえる。凍てつく叙情と重量感が高い次元で釣り合い、バンドのゴシック・メタルは一つの完成形へと近づいている。静謐と激情の交錯も見事だ。

Frozen is Sentenced's fifth album, on which they deepened their gothic shading with cold guitar textures and sunken melodies. They refined the gothic metal direction established on the previous Down with greater precision. It is also a work from a period when the band's cohesion grew, as Laihiala and Kukkohovi joined the composition as full members. Opening with an instrumental overture titled "Kaamos," frozen melancholy runs throughout, from "Farewell" to "Mourn." A video was made for "The Suicider." The overture's title "Kaamos" is the Finnish word for the Polar Night, the period north of the Arctic Circle when the sun does not rise. The harsh Nordic winter of the band's home is etched directly into the sound. Production was again handled by Waldemar Sorychta, and it was recorded at Woodhouse Studios in Germany. An accomplished record of cold, beautiful melancholic metal, like a Nordic winter. It can be called a leaner, more refined version of the formula presented on its predecessor. Frozen sorrow and heaviness balance at a high level, and the band's gothic metal draws near a form of completion, with a fine interplay of quiet and passion.
