Blackout is the eighth album on which Scorpions pull hard riffs, sharp guitar solos and Klaus Meine’s soaring voice into lean songs. The sound is heavy yet never dull, and each song moves without hesitation on short phrases and strong beats — a tightened record that cemented the band’s international breakthrough. From the urgency of the title track “Blackout” and the songcraft of “No One Like You” to the explosiveness of “Dynamite” and the drive of “Can’t Live Without You,” the album unites melody and aggression at high density, and it is striking that the closing ballad “When the Smoke Is Going Down” leaves a deep afterglow following the intensity.
