『Street Machine』は、サミー・ヘイガーがギターを手に取り、直線的なロックンロールと高く抜けるヴォーカルをまとめた第4作だ。曲はスピード感を持ちながらも、リフの太さとメロディの親しみやすさを両立させ、バンドの演奏も終始タイトに前へと進んでいく。ソロ期の力強さが、明確に表れた一枚である。 冒頭“Growing Pains”の勢い、“Plain Jane”の荒々しさ、“Trans Am (Highway Wonderland)”のドライブ感、そして“This Planet's on Fire”の熱気まで、収録曲は70年代末のアメリカン・ハード・ロックらしい開放感を伝えている。締めくくりの“Straight to the Top”の上昇感も、アルバムに前向きな推進力を与えている。 汗のにじむライヴ感と、歌の強さを兼ね備えた、ハガーの持ち味がよく表れた作品だ。派手な装飾よりも、スピードと熱量、そして親しみやすいフックで勝負した点が心地よい。“Child to Man”“Wounded in Love”のような曲でも、スピード感のある演奏と親しみやすいメロディが結び付き、作品に一貫した推進力を与えている。ソロ・アーティストとしての勢いが増していく時期の、力強く充実したロックンロール作品と言える。

Street Machine is the fourth album on which Sammy Hagar takes up the guitar and pulls together linear rock and roll and a high, breaking-through vocal. The songs carry speed while uniting thick riffs and accessible melody, and the band’s playing advances tightly throughout. His solo-era strength appears clearly. From the drive of the opener “Growing Pains” and the wildness of “Plain Jane” to the drive of “Trans Am (Highway Wonderland)” and the heat of “This Planet’s on Fire,” the songs convey a late-1970s American-hard-rock openness, while the rising feel of the closing “Straight to the Top” lends the album a positive drive. It is a record that well expresses Hagar’s strengths, holding both a sweat-soaked live feel and the strength of the singing. It feels good that it wins on speed, heat and accessible hooks rather than flashy decoration. It is a powerful, fulfilling rock-and-roll record from the period when his momentum as a solo artist grew.
