『Musical Chairs』は、サミー・ヘイガーがさらに荒々しいギター・ロックへと踏み込んだ第3作だ。デニー・カーマッシ、ビル・チャーチ、アラン・フィッツジェラルドといった演奏陣の音は太く、ハガーの声は曲の中を一直線に抜けていく。バンドとしての生々しい熱量が、全編にみなぎっている。 冒頭“Turn Up the Music”の直進力、“You Make Me Crazy”のフック、そして曲ごとに置かれたブルース寄りのリフは、70年代後半のアメリカン・ハード・ロックを生々しく伝えている。大掛かりな仕掛けに頼るのではなく、演奏の熱と歌の推進力そのもので聴かせる姿勢が、全編を貫いている。 派手さよりも、バンドが一体となって鳴らすグルーヴと勢いを重視した作りが、本作の魅力だ。荒削りでありながら、サミーの伸びやかなヴォーカルと、タイトなバンド演奏が生む化学反応が心地よい。“Reckless”“Crack in the World”のような曲でも、太いリフと一直線に抜ける歌声が結び付き、作品に一貫した熱量を与えている。元MONTROSE組ならではの、タイトで骨太な演奏が光る。ソロ初期のサミー・ヘイガーの、汗のにじむようなライヴ感と勢いを凝縮した、力強いハード・ロック作品と言える。

Musical Chairs is the third album on which Sammy Hagar steps into rougher guitar rock. The playing of a band including Denny Carmassi, Bill Church and Alan Fitzgerald is thick, and Hagar’s voice cuts straight through the songs. A raw, band-level heat fills the whole. From the drive of the opener “Turn Up the Music” and the hook of “You Make Me Crazy” to the bluesy riffs placed in each song, it conveys late-1970s American hard rock rawly. A stance of winning on the heat of the playing and the drive of the singing themselves, rather than relying on large-scale tricks, runs throughout. Its appeal is a construction that values the groove and momentum of a band playing as one over flash. Rough yet pleasing, the chemistry between Sammy’s soaring vocal and the tight band playing feels good. It is a powerful hard-rock record that concentrates the sweat-soaked live feel and momentum of early solo Sammy Hagar.
