『X』は、ROYAL HUNTが、劇的で華麗なキーボード、硬質なギター、そして陰影のあるメロディを重ね合わせ、シンフォニックで、プログレッシヴなメタルの、その持ち味を、力強く見せた作品だ。バンドにとって、記念すべき10作目のスタジオ・アルバムにあたり、タイトルの「X」は、ローマ数字の10を意味している。複雑で凝った装飾を、随所に使いながらも、その楽曲には、常に、歌としての、強く明快な輪郭が、しっかりと備わっている。 冒頭“Episode X (Arrival)”から“End of the Line”へと至る展開、そして“King for a Day”のドラマ性、力強い“Army of Slaves”まで、収録曲は、いずれも聴き応えがある。“Shadowman”“The Well”のような曲も、作品の充実を伝えている。アンドレ・アンダーセンの鍵盤が作り出す、緊張感あふれる場面と、重いギター・リフが支える、力強い推進力との、その見事な交差を、じっくりと味わいたい一枚だ。 シンフォニックな華やかさと、ヘヴィ・メタルの、確かな重量感とを、高い次元で両立させた、実にROYAL HUNTらしい一枚だ。本作は、マーク・ボールズが在籍した、最後のスタジオ作となった。この後、看板であったD.C.クーパーが、バンドに劇的に復帰することになる。円熟したバンドの、確かな実力を示した、聴き応えのある充実作と言える。

X is a work on which Royal Hunt, layering dramatic, gorgeous keyboards, hard guitar and shaded melody, powerfully shows its symphonic, progressive metal strengths. It is the band’s memorable tenth studio album, and the title “X” means the Roman numeral ten. While using complex, elaborate decoration in places, its songs always firmly hold a strong, clear song outline. From the development from the opener “Episode X (Arrival)” to “End of the Line” and the drama of “King for a Day” to the powerful “Army of Slaves,” every song is engaging, while cuts like “Shadowman” and “The Well” convey the work’s fullness. A record you want to carefully savor — the splendid intersection of the tense scenes André Andersen’s keyboards create and the powerful drive heavy guitar riffs support. A truly Royal Hunt-like record uniting symphonic splendor and heavy metal’s sure weight at a high level. This work became the last studio work Mark Boals belonged. After this, the flagship D.C. Cooper would dramatically return to the band. An engaging, fulfilling work showing the mature band’s sure ability.
