Armor of Light

『Armor of Light』は、マーク・リアリ亡き後のRIOT Vが、RIOTの伝統であるスピード・メタル、ツイン・ギター、歌心をさらに確かなものにした第16作だ。トッド・マイケル・ホール(ヴォーカル)、マイク・フリンツとニック・リー(ギター)、ドン・ヴァン・スタヴァーン(ベース)、フランク・ギルクリースト(ドラム)という編成で制作された。ホールの高く伸びる声と、ギターの攻撃的なハーモニーが、曲に勇ましい輝きを与える。 “Victory”“Heart of a Lion”などは、80年代のUSメタルの勢いを保ちながら、現代の演奏精度で鳴らされる。過去への敬意は強いが、単なる懐古にとどまらず、いま鳴っているバンドとしての生命力を示している。本作はドイツのチャートで27位を記録するなど、欧州を中心に高い評価を得た。“Messiah”“Set the World Alight”のような楽曲では、劇的な展開とスピードが両立している。前作で示したRIOT Vとしての方向性を、演奏面でも楽曲面でもさらに洗練させた一枚だ。ホールの伸びやかな歌声は、往年のトニー・ムーアを思わせる高揚感を放つ。バンド名に宿る精神を次世代へつなぐ、熱量の高いパワー・メタル作品である。

Armor of Light is the sixteenth album, on which the post-Reale Riot V made Riot's traditions of speed metal, twin guitars and melodic sense even surer. It was made with Todd Michael Hall (vocals), Mike Flyntz and Nick Lee (guitar), Don Van Stavern (bass) and Frank Gilchriest (drums). Hall's high, soaring voice and the aggressive harmonies of the guitars give the songs a valiant brilliance. Songs like "Victory" and "Heart of a Lion" are played with modern precision while keeping the momentum of 1980s US metal. Respect for the past is strong, but it does not stay mere nostalgia, showing the vitality of a band playing now. The album earned high regard mainly in Europe, reaching number 27 on the German charts. A high-energy power metal work that carries the spirit in the band's name to the next generation.
