『Power of the Dragonflame』は、RHAPSODY OF FIRE(当時のバンド名はラプソディー)が、オーケストラ的で壮麗なキーボード、荘厳な合唱、そして疾走する速いギターを用いて、壮大なファンタジー世界を、これ以上なく華麗に描いた、充実の作品だ。「エメラルド・ソード・サーガ」の、その壮大な物語を締めくくる、記念碑的な一枚である。楽曲は、まるで映画音楽のように、鮮やかに場面を転換しながらも、パワー・メタルならではの、確かなスピードと、その熱量とを、少しも失うことがない。より攻撃的で、ヘヴィな要素も増した一枚だ。 冒頭のイントロから、疾走する“Knightrider of Doom”へと至る展開、そして劇的な表題曲“Power of the Dragonflame”、さらに“The March of the Swordmaster”のような曲まで、収録曲は、いずれも聴き応えがある。“When Demons Awake”“Agony Is My Name”のような曲も、作品の充実を伝えている。ファビオ・リオーネの、オペラティックな歌声が、全編で力強く冴え渡っている。 大仰さを、決して恐れることなく、あくまで、壮大な物語を、音そのもので見せていく、その徹底した姿勢が、色濃く貫かれた一枚だ。シンフォニック・パワー・メタルの、その醍醐味を、最も華やかで、力強い形で味わうことができる。第一部のサーガを、見事に完結させた、力強く聴き応えのある傑作と言える。バンドの壮大な物語の一つの到達点だ。

Power of the Dragonflame is a fulfilling work on which Rhapsody of Fire (then named Rhapsody), using orchestral, grand keyboards, solemn choirs and speeding fast guitar, draws a grand fantasy world as gorgeously as possible. A monumental record capping the grand story of the “Emerald Sword Saga.” The songs, while changing scenes vividly like film music, never lose the sure speed and intensity particular to power metal. A record on which more aggressive, heavy elements also increased. From the development from the opening intro to the speeding “Knightrider of Doom” and the dramatic title track “Power of the Dragonflame” to a cut like “The March of the Swordmaster,” every song is engaging, while cuts like “When Demons Awake” and “Agony Is My Name” convey the work’s fullness. Fabio Lione’s operatic voice is powerfully in sharp form throughout. A record strongly running through with a thorough stance of showing the grand story with the sound itself, never fearing grandeur.
