『Dark Wings of Steel』は、RHAPSODY OF FIREが、重く力強いギター・リフ、壮麗なキーボードとオーケストレーション、そして劇的なヴォーカルとを組み合わせた、充実の作品だ。共同創設者であった、ルカ・トゥリッリの脱退後、アレックス・スタロポリが、その中心となって制作された、新体制での第一作にあたる。幻想的で華やかな装飾は、あくまで豊かだが、その楽曲の核には、ヘヴィ・メタルとしての、力強いリフと、確かな推進力とが、しっかりと据えられている。バンドの、新たな一歩を刻んだ一枚である。 冒頭のインストゥルメンタルから“Rising from Tragic Flames”へと至る展開、そして“Angel of Light”のドラマ性、さらに“Vis Divina”のような曲まで、収録曲は、いずれも聴き応えがある。“Fly to Crystal Skies”“Tears of Pain”のような曲も、作品の充実を伝えている。ファビオ・リオーネの、オペラティックな歌声が、その世界観を、力強く牽引している。 速く力強いパートと、壮大なミドルテンポとが、絶えず交差し、その物語性のある、壮大な世界を、力強く支えていく一枚だ。シンフォニック・メタルならではの、あの華やかさと、より重く硬質な感触とを、その両方を、存分に味わうことができる。中心人物の脱退という、大きな転換期にありながらも、バンドが、その音楽性を、力強く維持してみせた、聴き応えのある充実作と言える。バンドの新体制を告げる一枚だ。

Dark Wings of Steel is a fulfilling work on which Rhapsody of Fire combines heavy, powerful guitar riffs, grand keyboards and orchestration, and dramatic vocals. It is the first work of the new lineup, made with Alex Staropoli at the center after the departure of the co-founder Luca Turilli. The fantastical, gorgeous decoration is rich, yet at the songs’ core, powerful riffs and a sure drive as heavy metal are firmly placed. A record inscribing a new step for the band. From the development from the opening instrumental to “Rising from Tragic Flames” and the drama of “Angel of Light” to a cut like “Vis Divina,” every song is engaging, while cuts like “Fly to Crystal Skies” and “Tears of Pain” convey the work’s fullness.
