『Difficult to Cure』は、ジョー・リン・ターナーの歌声とリッチー・ブラックモアのギターで、RAINBOWがメロディックなハード・ロックへ進んだ第5作だ。グラハム・ボネットに代わって加入したターナーにとって、フル参加した最初のアルバムである。バンドはより明快でメロディックな、商業的にも成功しうる方向へと舵を切った。ドラムにはボビー・ロンディネリが座り、ベースとプロデュースはロジャー・グローヴァーが担った。長年の要だったコージー・パウエルは、この前に脱退している。 “I Surrender”“Can't Happen Here”“Spotlight Kid”といった、力強い楽曲が並ぶ。ラス・バラードの作による“I Surrender”は、イギリスで大きなヒットを記録した。表題曲“Difficult to Cure”は、ベートーヴェンの交響曲第9番を大胆に取り込んだインストゥルメンタルである。ドン・エイリーのキーボードも冴えわたる。ブラックモアの新たな一面を示した、充実の一枚である。“I Surrender”はイギリスのシングル・チャートで3位まで上昇し、バンド最大級のヒットとなった。

Difficult to Cure is Rainbow's fifth album, on which they advanced toward melodic hard rock with Joe Lynn Turner's voice and Ritchie Blackmore's guitar. For Turner, who joined in place of Graham Bonnet, it was his first full album. The band steered toward a clearer, more melodic direction that could also succeed commercially. Bobby Rondinelli sat on drums, while Roger Glover handled bass and production. Cozy Powell, long a linchpin, had left before this. Powerful songs like "I Surrender," "Can't Happen Here" and "Spotlight Kid" line up. "I Surrender," written by Russ Ballard, became a big hit in the UK. The title track "Difficult to Cure" is an instrumental that boldly incorporates Beethoven's Ninth Symphony. Don Airey's keyboards also shine. An accomplished record showing a new side of Blackmore. "I Surrender" rose to No. 3 on the UK singles chart, becoming one of the band's biggest hits.
