Wings of Rage

『Wings of Rage』は、ドイツ・メタルらしい前進力と、バンド固有の哀愁を結び付けた作品だ。ピーヴィー・ワグナーの特徴的な声、マルコス・ロドリゲスのギター、ラッキー・マニアトポロスのドラムという三人編成が、スピードと重量の間を自在に行き来する。トリオならではの引き締まった一体感が全編に漂う。 激しい曲でも旋律の輪郭がはっきりと残り、ミドル・テンポの場面では感情の陰影が深まる。スラッシュの鋭さ、パワー・メタルの歌心、重厚なハード・ロックの足腰を一枚にまとめ上げ、無駄をそぎ落とした剥き出しのメタルとして成立させている。 小編成であることは、決して迫力の不足を意味しない。むしろ三人が密に噛み合うことで、リフと歌の輪郭がより明快に立ち上がっている。長いキャリアを持つバンドが、今なお攻撃性と旋律性を両立させていることを示した、力強い作品と言える。三人という最小限の編成だからこそ、各パートの役割が明確で、リフ、ベース、ドラムの一つひとつが克明に聴き取れる。疾走する場面では鋭さが際立ち、テンポを落とした場面では哀愁が深く沈み込む。装飾を削ぎ落としたぶん、RAGEというバンドが本来持っている旋律とパワーの核が、むしろくっきりと立ち上がってくる。長い歴史の中で培われた確かな作曲力が、飾らないサウンドの中で光っている。トリオ体制の強さを鮮明に刻んだ一枚である。

Wings of Rage binds the forward drive typical of German metal to the band’s own melancholy. A three-piece of Peavy Wagner’s distinctive voice, Marcos Rodriguez on guitar and Lucky Maniatopoulos on drums moves freely between speed and weight, and a tight, trio-born unity runs through the whole record. Even in the fierce songs the melodic outline stays clear, and in the mid-tempo passages the emotional shading deepens. It gathers thrash sharpness, power-metal songcraft and the sturdy footing of heavy hard rock into one, standing as lean, stripped-back metal. Being a small lineup does not mean a lack of power; rather, with the three interlocking closely, the outlines of riff and voice rise more plainly. It is a strong record showing that a band with a long career still unites aggression and melody — a work that vividly captures the strength of the trio format.
