Lingua Mortis

『Lingua Mortis』は、RAGEのヘヴィ・メタルをオーケストラと真正面からぶつけ、曲のドラマ性を大きく拡張した作品だ。弦や管の響きは単なる装飾ではなく、リフと同じ重さを持つもう一つの推進力として機能している。メタルと管弦楽の融合を、実演の迫力で追求した意欲作である。 “In a Nameless Time”“Alive But Dead”といった楽曲を軸に、既存曲の再構築やメドレー形式を通して、RAGEの楽曲が持つ叙事性が際立つ。ギターとオーケストラが対等に渡り合うことで、原曲とは異なる荘厳さと緊張が立ち上がってくる。 のちに一大ジャンルとなるシンフォニック・メタルの発想を、早い段階で本格的に形にした点で、歴史的な意義を持つ一枚だ。過剰に美しさへ流れず、あくまでヘヴィネスとの緊張を保っているのがRAGEらしい。メドレー形式で組まれた中間部では、“Black In Mind”“Firestorm”といった既発曲がオーケストラとともに再構築され、原曲の攻撃性とは異なる荘厳なドラマが生まれている。管弦楽がリフを覆い隠すのではなく、互いに緊張を保ちながら渡り合う構成が見事だ。メタルとクラシックの融合という難題に、実演の迫力で正面から挑んだ気概が全編に漂っている。後年のオーケストラ路線へ続く、重要な出発点として記憶されるべき作品である。
