『Vulgar Display of Power』は、PANTERAがスピードだけに頼らず、低くうねるグルーヴそのものを重さへと変えた作品だ。ダイムバッグ・ダレルの切り裂くようなギター、ヴィニー・ポールとレックスの巨大なリズム、フィル・アンセルモの剥き出しの叫びが一体となっている。グルーヴ・メタルというジャンルを決定づけた、金字塔的な一枚である。 “Mouth for War”“Walk”“This Love”といった楽曲は、単純な構造でも圧倒的な存在感を持つ。とりわけ“Walk”の重量感あるグルーヴは、バンドの代名詞ともなった。“A New Level”“Fucking Hostile”“Hollow”のような楽曲にも、バンドの充実した演奏が息づいている。怒りと身体性を直接音に変えたこの作品は、以後のヘヴィ・メタルに計り知れない影響を残した。バンドの代表作にして、90年代メタルの必聴盤である。前作で切り開いた路線をさらに突き詰めた本作は、グルーヴ・メタルの完成形として今なお多くのバンドに影響を与え続けており、プロデューサーのテリー・デイトとの緻密な作業によりバンドの攻撃的なサウンドは完璧に捉えられている。怒りと暴力性を音楽に昇華させた、90年代を代表する名盤の一つだ。

Vulgar Display of Power is a work on which PANTERA, not relying on speed alone, turned the low-surging groove itself into weight. Dimebag Darrell’s slashing guitar, the massive rhythm of Vinnie Paul and Rex, and Phil Anselmo’s bare screams become one. It is a monumental record that defined the genre of groove metal. Songs like “Mouth for War,” “Walk” and “This Love” have overwhelming presence even with simple structures. In particular, the weighty groove of “Walk” became the band’s byword. Songs like “A New Level,” “Fucking Hostile” and “Hollow” breathe the band’s full playing too. This work, turning anger and physicality directly into sound, left an immeasurable influence on later heavy metal. As the band’s signature work, it is a must-hear of 1990s metal.
