Vulgar Display of Power
LINER NOTES
LANGUAGE
Vulgar Display of Power is a work on which PANTERA, not relying on speed alone, turned the low-surging groove itself into weight. Dimebag Darrell’s slashing guitar, the massive rhythm of Vinnie Paul and Rex, and Phil Anselmo’s bare screams become one. It is a monumental record that defined the genre of groove metal.
Songs like “Mouth for War,” “Walk” and “This Love” have overwhelming presence even with simple structures. In particular, the weighty groove of “Walk” became the band’s byword. Songs like “A New Level,” “Fucking Hostile” and “Hollow” breathe the band’s full playing too. This work, turning anger and physicality directly into sound, left an immeasurable influence on later heavy metal. As the band’s signature work, it is a must-hear of 1990s metal.
