Cowboys from Hell

『Cowboys from Hell』は、PANTERAが重いリフと粘るリズムを中心に、速度よりも身体へ届く圧力を追求した作品だ。鋭いリフ、跳ねるリズム、切り裂く歌を一体化させ、80年代的な装飾から離れた新しい重量感を鮮烈に示している。グラム期と決別し、グルーヴ・メタルという新境地を切り開いた、事実上のデビュー作である。 “Cowboys from Hell”“Cemetery Gates”“Domination”といった楽曲では、ギターは短い反復で強い輪郭を作り、ドラムとベースは跳ねと重量を同時に支えている。“Primal Concrete Sledge”“The Art of Shredding”のような楽曲にも、バンドの充実した演奏が息づいている。シンプルな素材を強い配置で鳴らし、90年代型の重量感を鮮明に刻んでいる。メジャー・デビュー作にして、後のメタル・シーンを大きく変えることになる歴史的な一枚である。本作でPANTERAはそれまでのグラム・メタル路線を完全に捨て去り、ダウン・チューニングされた重いギターとグルーヴを前面に押し出した。この革新的なサウンドは後に「グルーヴ・メタル」と呼ばれる新たなジャンルの礎を築き、“Cemetery Gates”のような叙情的な大曲もバンドの表現の幅を示している。

Cowboys from Hell is a work on which PANTERA, centered on heavy riffs and sticky rhythm, pursued pressure that reaches the body over speed. Unifying sharp riffs, bouncing rhythm and slashing singing, it vividly shows a new weight removed from 1980s ornament. Parting from the glam period, it is the effective debut that opened up the new frontier of groove metal. On “Cowboys from Hell,” “Cemetery Gates” and “Domination,” the guitar makes a strong outline with short repetition, and the drums and bass support bounce and weight at once. Songs like “Primal Concrete Sledge” and “The Art of Shredding” breathe the band’s full playing too. Sounding simple materials in strong placement, they clearly carve a 1990s-type weight. As a major-label debut, it is a historic record that would greatly change the later metal scene.
