I Am the Night

『I Am the Night』は、PANTERAがグラム・メタル期の集大成として発表した第3作だ。テリー・グレイズが在籍した最後の作品であり、初期のスタイルが一つの完成を見た一枚でもある。より重く、より攻撃的な要素も現れ始めた、過渡期の充実作である。 派手さを残しながらも、ダイムバッグ・ダレルのギターはより速く鋭くなり、後のスラッシュ／グルーヴ・メタルへとつながる萌芽が随所に感じられる。アボット兄弟の演奏は、この時点ですでに高い技術を備えている。グラム期のPANTERAとしては最も完成度が高いと評されることも多い。バンドが次なる飛躍への助走を始めた、重要な転換点を示す一枚である。1985年に発表された本作は、グラム／ヘヴィ・メタル路線をさらに推し進めた作品である。テリー・グレイズはこの作品を最後にバンドを去り、これによりPANTERAは大きな転換点を迎えることになった。楽曲は前2作よりも一段と洗練され、特にダイムバッグ・ダレルのギター・ワークはスラッシュ・メタルの影響を感じさせる鋭さを備え始めていた。後のグルーヴ・メタルの帝王へとつながる確かな成長の跡が、ここには刻まれている。初期のPANTERAの一つの到達点を示す貴重な作品であり、バンドが大きく生まれ変わるその直前の姿がここにある。

I Am the Night is the third album PANTERA released as the culmination of their glam-metal period. It is the last work on which Terry Glaze was a member, and a record on which the early style saw a certain completion. It is a full transitional work on which heavier, more aggressive elements also began to appear. While keeping the flamboyance, Dimebag Darrell’s guitar becomes faster and sharper, and buds leading to the later thrash/groove metal can be felt throughout. The Abbott brothers’ playing already has high technique at this point. It is often rated as the most complete of the glam-period PANTERA. It is a record showing an important turning point, on which the band began its run-up toward the next leap.
