Second Coming

『Second Coming』は、NORDIC UNIONが2018年11月9日に届けた第2作である。編成は変わらない。ロニー・アトキンスの歌、エリック・モーテンソンのギター・ベース・鍵盤とプロデュース、マグナス・ウルフステットのドラム。だが作り方は変わった。アトキンス自身がこう説明している。最初のアルバムは、お互いをよく知らないまま進めた「パイロット企画」のようなものだった。今回は個々の曲の方向性について随分話し合い、主に詞の面で自分がより深く関わった、と。 前作の複製にはしない、しかし元の型から離れすぎもしない。それが二人の合意だった。全11曲。冒頭“My Fear & My Faith”から“Because of Us”“It Burns”へ、サビは一度で覚えられるほど明快だが、アレンジには重さがある。この2曲にはルネ・U・ヴァルデス監督によるヴィデオが作られている。プリティ・メイズとエクリプスのどちらの余技でもある以上、二人が同じ部屋に集まる時間は限られていた。“Walk Me Through the Fire”の推進力を経て、締めは“Outrun You”。二人の持ち味を平均化するのではなく、それぞれの強さをそのまま前へ出したことが、この作品の魅力である。

Second Coming is the second album, delivered on 9 November 2018. The line-up is unchanged: Atkins singing, Mårtensson on guitar, bass and keyboards and producing, Magnus Ulfstedt on drums. The method changed, though. Atkins explained it himself: the first album was something of a pilot project, made before they really knew each other, whereas this time they talked a great deal about the direction of the individual songs and he was more involved in the writing, mainly on the lyrics. Don't copy the first record, but don't step too far from the original formula either — that was what the two agreed. There are eleven tracks. From the opening “My Fear & My Faith” into “Because of Us” and “It Burns,” the choruses land in a single pass while the arrangements keep their weight. Videos directed by Renè U Valdes were made for those two. Being a side project for both Pretty Maids and Eclipse, the hours the pair could spend in one room were always limited. Past the drive of “Walk Me Through the Fire,” it closes on “Outrun You.” The appeal is that it never averages the two men out; it pushes each of their strengths straight to the front.
