Animalistic

『Animalistic』は、事情を知った上で聴くほかない一枚である。2020年の復活祭の頃、ロニー・アトキンスはステージ4の癌と診断された。彼は家で塞ぎ込む代わりに、音楽へ突っ込んだ。2021年3月にソロ作『One Shot』、ちょうど一年後の2022年3月に『Make It Count』。その合間の2021年末から2022年初頭にかけて、エリック・モーテンソンと再び組んで本作を作っている。NORDIC UNIONの第3作、フロンティアーズからの発表である。企画としては2015年のペルジーノの思いつきから始まったが、この三枚目に関して言えば、事情はもはやそこにない。 曲の大半はモーテンソンが書き、アトキンスとミカエル・パーションが加わった。プロデュース、ミックス、マスタリングもモーテンソン。アトキンスの歌はヤコブ・ハンセンが録っている。ドラムはマグナス・ウルフステットが去り、ヘンリク・エリクソンへ交代した。全11曲。冒頭は“On This Day I Fight”——この日、俺は戦う。続く“In Every Waking Hour”、バラード“Riot”、そして締めは“King for a Day”。題名を知った上で曲名を並べるだけで、この作品が何であるかは伝わる。

Animalistic can only be heard with the circumstances in mind. Around Easter 2020, Ronnie Atkins was given a stage four cancer diagnosis. Rather than sit at home, he threw himself at music: the solo album One Shot in March 2021, then Make It Count almost a year to the day later in March 2022. In the gap between them, in late 2021 and early 2022, he teamed up with Erik Mårtensson again to make this — Nordic Union's third album, released by Frontiers. The project began as Perugino's 2015 idea, but by the third record that is no longer what it is about. Mårtensson wrote the bulk of it, with contributions from Atkins and Miqael Persson, and produced, mixed and mastered it too. Atkins's vocals were recorded by Jacob Hansen. Magnus Ulfstedt had gone from the drum stool and Henrik Eriksson took his place. There are eleven tracks. It opens on “On This Day I Fight.” Then “In Every Waking Hour,” the ballad “Riot,” and a close on “King for a Day.” Knowing what you know, simply reading the song titles in order tells you what this record is.
