Seven is a late-1990s studio album on which the reunited golden-era lineup further consolidates the momentum reclaimed on Neverland. Built around big choruses and tidy guitar work, it re-presents the band’s signature melodic hard rock with a composed touch. Following on from the previous album as a more relaxed, natural rock record, it carries the band’s consistent sense of aesthetics throughout. It is an earnest record that wins on the quality of the songs and steady playing rather than on flashy talking points. Brad Gillis and Jeff Watson’s guitars combine sharpness with service to the song, tightening the key moments, while the twin vocals of Jack Blades and Kelly Keagy carry accessible melodies. No explosive 1980s-style hit emerged, but the mature songwriting and careful arrangements offer plenty to satisfy longtime fans. The unchanging weapons of twin guitars and twin vocals function reliably, making it a firm milestone across a long career.
