『Feeding off the Mojo』は、長い活動休止を経て再始動したNIGHT RANGERが、90年代の空気を取り込みながら制作した再起動作だ。ジャック・ブレイズがダム・ヤンキースやソロ活動へ注力していた時期に当たり、編成を組み替えて録音された点が本作の背景にある。ブラッド・ギルスとケリー・キーギを軸に再始動したバンドは、往年のヒット・フォーミュラをただなぞるのではなく、当時のハード・ロックの潮流に沿った新たな表現を模索した。そのため往年の産業ロック的な華やかさよりも、より硬質でストレートなハード・ロックの手触りが前面へ出ている。 グランジやオルタナティヴが台頭した時代にあって、大仰なプロダクションを抑え、ギターとリズムの生々しさを重視したサウンドは、当時のシーンとの緊張関係を映している。ブラッド・ギルスのギターは相変わらず鋭く、メロディへの意識も保たれているが、全体のトーンは陰影を帯びて落ち着いている。結果として、明るく開けた80年代のサウンドとは趣を異にする、力強くも渋みのある作品に仕上がった。商業的には初期の大ヒット群に及ばなかったものの、時代の変化へ正面から向き合った姿勢が刻まれ、後の完全再結成へと橋を架ける重要な過渡期の記録となっている。

Feeding off the Mojo is the restart album NIGHT RANGER made after a long hiatus, taking in the atmosphere of the 1990s. It falls in a period when Jack Blades was focused on Damn Yankees and solo work, and the background of the record is that it was recorded with a reconfigured lineup. Restarting around Brad Gillis and Kelly Keagy, the band sought new expression in line with the hard-rock currents of the day rather than simply retracing its old hit formula. As a result, a harder, more direct hard-rock feel comes to the front, rather than the arena-rock glamour of old. In an era when grunge and alternative had risen, the sound reins in grand production and emphasizes the rawness of guitar and rhythm, reflecting a tension with the scene of the time. Brad Gillis’ guitar is as sharp as ever and a sense of melody is preserved, but the overall tone is shaded and subdued. The result is a strong yet weathered record, different in character from the bright, open sound of the 1980s. It did not match the early blockbusters commercially, yet it captures a band facing change head-on, and it stands as an important transitional document that bridges toward the full reunion to come.
