『Actual Size』は、リッチー・コッツェン在籍期のMR. BIGが持っていた、ファンク、ハード・ロック、ポップの混ざり方を端的に示す作品だ。演奏は高度でも誇示に傾かず、曲のフックを最優先にしている。ポール・ギルバートの後任にリッチー・コッツェンを迎えて制作された、新体制での一枚である。 “Lost In America”“Shine”“Arrow”といった楽曲では、ポール・ギルバート期とは異なる色合いながら、ビリー・シーンとパット・トーピーのリズム隊は変わらぬ推進力を発揮している。“Wake Up”“One World Away”“Crawl Over Me”のような楽曲にも、バンドの充実した演奏が息づいている。リッチー・コッツェンの加入によりバンドのサウンドはよりブルージーでソウルフルな方向へと深化しており、ポール・ギルバート期とは異なる魅力を持つ新体制でも高い完成度を誇る意欲的な一枚である。ギタリストとしてだけでなくソングライターとしても才能を発揮するコッツェンの個性が、新たな魅力を加えている。円熟した演奏と親しみやすいメロディが両立した、充実した一枚だ。バンドの新たな可能性を切り開いた意義深い作品でもあり、コッツェンの歌とギターが加わったサウンドは今なお色褪せない魅力を放っている。

Actual Size is a work that plainly shows the mix of funk, hard rock and pop that MR. BIG had during the Richie Kotzen period. Even where the playing is advanced, it does not tilt toward showing off, prioritizing the songs’ hooks. It is a record from the new lineup, made welcoming Richie Kotzen as Paul Gilbert’s successor. On “Lost In America,” “Shine” and “Arrow,” though with a different coloring from the Paul Gilbert period, the rhythm section of Billy Sheehan and Pat Torpey shows unchanged drive. Songs like “Wake Up,” “One World Away” and “Crawl Over Me” breathe the band’s full playing too. Kotzen’s personality, showing talent not only as a guitarist but as a songwriter, adds a new appeal. It is a full record on which matured playing and accessible melody balance.
