Through Our Darkest Days

『Through Our Darkest Days』は、メロデスの攻撃性とパワー・メタルの歌心を、暗くドラマティックに結び付けたMERCENARYの第七作だ。前作『Metamorphosis』で打ち出したモダンな要素と、初期作の壮大な哀愁やクリーン・ヴォーカルとを、あらためて融合させている。逆境を乗り越え、困難を生き抜くことを主題に掲げた一枚だ。 “A New Dawn”“Welcome the Sickness”“Through Our Darkest Days”といった、劇的な楽曲が並ぶ。プロデュースは長年の盟友ヤコブ・ハンセンが手掛け、ジャケットはMNEMICのミルチェア・エフテミエが担当した。ドラムには新加入のピーター・マティーセンが参加している。この頃までにMERCENARYは、MEGADETHやARCH ENEMY、NEVERMORE、KING DIAMONDら大物との共演を重ね、デンマーク・メタルの最前線に立っていた。新旧の要素を束ねた、バランスの取れた一枚だ。この後、バンドは長い沈黙に入ることになる、充実の一枚である。結果として、本作は約10年にわたる活動休止の前の最後の作品となった。

Through Our Darkest Days is Mercenary's seventh album, on which they tied the aggression of melodic death to the melodic heart of power metal in a dark, dramatic way. It once again fuses the modern elements put forward on the previous Metamorphosis with the grand melancholy and clean vocals of their early works. It is a record whose theme is overcoming adversity and getting through hardship. Dramatic songs like "A New Dawn," "Welcome the Sickness" and "Through Our Darkest Days" line up. Production was handled by longtime ally Jacob Hansen, and the cover art by Mircea Eftemie of Mnemic. New member Peter Mathiesen joined on drums. By this time Mercenary had shared stages with major acts like Megadeth, Arch Enemy, Nevermore and King Diamond, standing at the forefront of Danish metal. A balanced record bundling old and new elements. An accomplished record, after which the band would enter a long silence. As it turned out, it became their last album before roughly a decade of dormancy.
