Architect of Lies

『Architect of Lies』は、メロディックな歌と苛烈な咆哮を交差させ、MERCENARYがダークで壮大なデス・メタルを構築した第五作だ。前作で不在だったデス声が、新加入のルネ・ペダーセンによって復活した。サナヤーのクリーン・ヴォーカルとペダーセンの激しいシャウトが、より均衡した二枚看板として響き合っている。 “New Desire”“Isolation”“Embrace the Nothing”といった、劇的で重厚な楽曲が並ぶ。プロデュースは再びヤコブ・ハンセンが手掛けた。レーベルによれば、精力的なツアーの直後に録音されたことで、ライブの熱気と即興性がそのまま刻まれた、彼らにとって最も勢いのある一枚だという。時にスラッシュ・メタル的なリフも顔を出す。メロディとダークネス、キャッチーさと複雑さのバランスに長けた、彼ら屈指の完成度を誇る一枚である。本作はミッケル・サナヤーが参加した最後のアルバムとなった。本作を携え、バンドはMEGADETHのサポートやWacken Open Airへの出演を果たすなど、活動の幅を広げていった。ダークさと壮麗さを兼ね備えた、彼らの代表作の一つである。

Architect of Lies is Mercenary's fifth album, on which they built dark, grand death metal by crossing melodic singing with fierce roars. The death growls absent from the previous album returned with new member René Pedersen. Sandager's clean vocals and Pedersen's fierce shouts resonate as a more balanced twin-vocal pairing. Dramatic, heavy songs like "New Desire," "Isolation" and "Embrace the Nothing" line up. Production was again handled by Jacob Hansen. According to the label, having been recorded right after intensive touring, it captures the heat and spontaneity of their live shows — their most immediate album, with thrash-like riffs occasionally surfacing. A record of some of their finest craft, skilled in balancing melody and darkness, catchiness and complexity. It became the last album to feature Mikkel Sandager. Behind this album, the band broadened their reach, supporting Megadeth and appearing at Wacken Open Air. Combining darkness and grandeur, it stands as one of their signature works.
