MK II

『MK II』は、MASTERPLANが洗練されたキーボード、重いギター、ドラマティックなヴォーカルを一体化させた第3作だ。タイトルは編成の一新を意味する。ヨルン・ランデが音楽性の違いから脱退し、続いて共同創設者のウリ・カッシュも去ったため、元ライオットのマイク・ディメオ(ヴォーカル)と、元レイジのマイク・テラーナ(ドラム)を迎えた。2007年2月にAFMから発表され、グラポウが自身のスロヴァキアのスタジオで、2006年秋に録音とプロデュースを手がけている。 曲はプログレッシヴな動きを持ちながらも、核となるフックを明確に保っている。序奏“Phoenix Rising”から疾走する“Warrior's Cry”へ、そして“Lost and Gone”のキャッチーさ、“Take Me Over”の重量感、バンド名を冠した“Masterplan”の圧、7分に及ぶ“Heart of Darkness”まで振れ幅は広い。新しい声を迎えたバンドは、力強さと繊細さを行き来しながら独自の輪郭を作る。ディメオの歌はランデより80年代的な色を帯び、作品に別の質感を与えた。技術の密度を大きなメロディへ還元した、充実の一枚である。

MK II is the third album, integrating refined keyboards, heavy guitar and dramatic vocals. The title signals a renewed lineup. Jørn Lande left over musical differences, then co-founder Uli Kusch departed too, so ex-Riot's Mike DiMeo (vocals) and ex-Rage's Mike Terrana (drums) came in. Released on AFM in February 2007, with Grapow recording and producing it at his own studio in Slovakia in autumn 2006. The songs have progressive movement yet keep their core hooks clear. From the intro “Phoenix Rising” into the racing “Warrior's Cry,” the catchiness of “Lost and Gone,” the heft of “Take Me Over,” the force of the band-titled “Masterplan,” to the seven-minute “Heart of Darkness,” the range is wide. With a new voice, the band moves between power and delicacy to draw its own outline. DiMeo's singing carries a more '80s color than Lande's, giving the record a different texture. A rich album that channels technical density back into big melody.
