Masterplan

『Masterplan』は、MASTERPLANが重いギター、広がりのあるキーボード、力強い歌を組み合わせ、洗練されたメロディック・メタルを作り上げたデビュー作だ。2001年にヘロウィンを解雇されたローランド・グラポウ(ギター)とウリ・カッシュ(ドラム)が結成し、ラッセル・アレンやミヒャエル・キスクに断られた末、アークのヨルン・ランデを迎えて完成させた。2003年にAFMから発表され、アンディ・スニープがプロデュースを担当。鍵盤はチルドレン・オヴ・ボドムのヤンネ・ヴィルマンがセッションで参加し、以後はアクセル・マッケンロットが正式加入した。 曲は技術的でありながら、サビでは明快なフックへ着地し、大きな開放感を残す。“Spirit Never Die”の高揚から“Enlighten Me”のフック、“Soulburn”や“Crystal Night”の陰影まで、硬さと華やかさの配分が巧みで、各パートが一体となって音の厚みを作る。“Heroes”では元ヘロウィンのキスクがゲストとしてランデとデュエットした。欧州各誌で月間ベストに選ばれ、翌年には欧州委員会からEuropean Border Breakers Awardを受賞。新バンドの出発点として完成度の高い一枚である。

Masterplan is the debut on which the band combined heavy guitar, expansive keyboards and powerful singing into refined melodic metal. Roland Grapow (guitar) and Uli Kusch (drums), dismissed from Helloween in 2001, formed it, and after Russell Allen and Michael Kiske declined, brought in Ark's Jørn Lande to complete it. Released on AFM in 2003 and produced by Andy Sneap. Children of Bodom's Janne Wirman played session keys; Axel Mackenrott joined permanently afterward. The songs are technical yet land on clear hooks in the choruses, leaving a wide sense of release. From the lift of “Spirit Never Die” and the hook of “Enlighten Me” to the shadow of “Soulburn” and “Crystal Night,” the balance of hardness and flash is skillful, with every part combining to build density. On “Heroes,” ex-Helloween singer Kiske guests in a duet with Lande. Voted album of the month by several European magazines, it won the European Border Breakers Award from the European Commission the following year — a highly accomplished starting point for a new band.
