『Aeronautics』は、太いギターとオルガン風の鍵盤を土台に、ヨルン・ランデの力強い歌声を大きく響かせた第2作だ。2005年にAFMから発表され、前作と同じくアンディ・スニープとバンドの共同プロデュースで制作された。ローランド・グラポウ(ギター)、ウリ・カッシュ(ドラム)、ヤン・S・エッカート(ベース)、アクセル・マッケンロット(キーボード)という黄金期の布陣が完全に揃った、唯一の作品でもある。ランデとカッシュはこの作品の後にバンドを去ることになる。 曲はパワー・メタルの勢いを持ちながら、ブルージーな温度とクラシック・ハードの重みも備えている。疾走する“Crimson Rider”、シングルとなった“Back for My Life”、ミドルの“Dark from the Dying”、そして10分近い大作“Black in the Burn”まで、フックの強いコーラスと緻密なアレンジが、長めの曲にも自然な流れを与える。飛行士を思わせるコンセプチュアルな雰囲気も作品を彩り、デビュー作より一段と統一感が増した。壮大さと歌心を無理なく結び付けた、MASTERPLANの最高到達点とも評される屈指の充実作である。

Aeronautics is the second album, sounding Jørn Lande's powerful voice large over a base of thick guitar and organ-like keyboards. Released on AFM in 2005 and, like the debut, co-produced by Andy Sneap and the band. It's also the only album with the golden-era lineup fully in place: Roland Grapow (guitar), Uli Kusch (drums), Jan S. Eckert (bass) and Axel Mackenrott (keyboards). Lande and Kusch would leave the band after this record. The songs carry power metal's momentum while also holding a bluesy warmth and classic hard rock weight. From the racing “Crimson Rider,” the single “Back for My Life,” the mid-tempo “Dark from the Dying,” to the nearly ten-minute epic “Black in the Burn,” strong hook-laden choruses and detailed arrangements give even the longer songs a natural flow. A conceptual air suggesting an aviator colors the record, and it gained more unity than the debut. Tying grandeur and melodic sense together effortlessly — a standout, often called Masterplan's high-water mark.
