『Of Kingdom and Crown』は、近未来的な物語を軸に、MACHINE HEADの重低音、激烈なリフ、感情をむき出しにする歌を長尺の構成で展開したコンセプト・アルバムだ。ヘヴィネスだけで押し切らず、メロディ、アコースティックな余白、曲間のドラマを組み込んでいる。新たなラインナップを迎えて制作された、バンドの現在地を示す大作である。 “Slaughter The Martyr”“Become The Firestorm”“No Gods, No Masters”といった楽曲では、主人公たちの衝突を音として描き出している。“Choke On The Ashes Of Your Hate”“Unhallowed”のような楽曲にも、バンドの充実した演奏が息づいている。本作は二人の主人公の視点が交錯する物語を軸にしたバンド初の本格的なコンセプト・アルバムであり、“Overdose”“Arrows In Words From The Sky”のような楽曲にもバンドの充実した演奏が息づいている。大幅なメンバー・チェンジを経てもなお、ロブ・フリンの創作意欲は少しも衰えていない。暴力的な推進力と叙情性を両立させている。二人の登場人物の物語をたどるという野心的な構成で、ロブ・フリン主導のバンドが新たな充実期を迎えたことを示す一枚である。

Of Kingdom and Crown is a concept album on which, centered on a near-future story, MACHINE HEAD developed their heavy low end, ferocious riffs and emotion-bared singing in a long-form construction. Rather than pushing through on heaviness alone, they incorporate melody, acoustic space and drama between songs. Made welcoming a new lineup, it is an epic that shows the band’s present standing. On “Slaughter The Martyr,” “Become The Firestorm” and “No Gods, No Masters,” they draw out the clash of the protagonists as sound. Songs like “Choke On The Ashes Of Your Hate” and “Unhallowed” breathe the band’s full playing too. They balance violent drive and lyricism. With an ambitious construction that follows the story of two characters, it is a record showing that the Robb Flynn-led band entered a new period of fullness.
