Catharsis

Catharsis gathers Machine Head’s anger, social gaze and personal feeling in its most expansive form. Robb Flynn’s guitar and vocal remain aggressive, but the album swings widely between thrash, groove metal, balladry and long-form drama. “Volatile,” “Bastards” and the title track show a band refusing to contain its emotions, even when that makes the record uneven. It is not a neatly ordered album, but that lack of restraint gives it urgency. This is for listeners ready to take in Machine Head’s experimental instinct and direct emotional force together.
