A Thousand Suns

『A Thousand Suns』は、LINKIN PARKが最も実験的な方向へと踏み込んだ第4作だ。前作に続きリック・ルービンとマイク・シノダがプロデュースを手掛け、アンビエントなエレクトロニクスとコンセプチュアルな構成を大胆に取り入れている。核戦争や社会の危機を主題に据え、インタールードと楽曲が一続きの物語として設計された。従来の攻撃性を期待するファンを驚かせつつ、バンドの表現の限界を大きく押し広げた作品だ。 “The Catalyst”は硬質なエレクトロニクスで方向を宣言し、“Waiting for the End”は希望を感じさせる大きなメロディを持つ。“Burning in the Skies”“Iridescent”のような楽曲では、静謐と高揚が交錯する。冒頭の“The Requiem”から終曲“The Messenger”まで、アルバムは一つの組曲のように設計されている。ロバート・オッペンハイマーの言葉を引用したインタールードも、作品の主題を強調する。賛否を呼びつつも、本作はバンドの野心と芸術性を鮮やかに示した。米ビルボード200で初登場1位を獲得し、LINKIN PARKが単なるニュー・メタル・バンドではないことを証明した意欲作である。

A Thousand Suns is the fourth album, on which Linkin Park stepped in its most experimental direction. Rick Rubin and Mike Shinoda produced again, boldly taking in ambient electronics and a conceptual structure. Setting nuclear war and societal crisis as themes, interludes and songs were designed as one continuous story. While surprising fans who expected the usual aggression, it greatly expanded the band's expressive limits. "The Catalyst" declares the direction with firm electronics, and "Waiting for the End" carries a big melody that suggests hope. On songs like "Burning in the Skies" and "Iridescent," quiet and elevation intersect. Though it drew divided responses, the album vividly showed the band's ambition and artistry. Debuting at number one on the US Billboard 200, it is an ambitious work proving Linkin Park was no mere nu-metal band.
