New American Gospel

『New American Gospel』は、LAMB OF GODが硬く刻むギターと変則的なリズムで、ランディ・ブライスの咆哮を押し上げた作品だ。曲にはハードコア的な切迫感があり、若いバンドの攻撃性がそのまま音になっている。バンド名をバーン・ザ・プリーストからLAMB OF GODへと改めて発表した、実質的なデビュー作である。 “Black Label”“The Black Dahlia”“Pariah”といった楽曲では、洗練よりも衝動を重視しながらも、後の方向性を示すリフの強さが明白だ。“A Warning”“Confessional”“Nippon”のような楽曲にも、初期らしい荒々しい魅力が息づいている。“In the Absence of the Sacred”“The Subtle Arts of Murder and Persuasion”のような楽曲にも、初期らしい荒々しい魅力が息づいている。本作はメタル・シーンにおいて後に「NWOAHM」と呼ばれるムーブメントの先駆けの一つとなり、後年の緻密さはまだ発展途上だがそのむき出しの攻撃性とグルーヴの強さは多くのフォロワーに影響を与えた。現代ヘヴィ・メタルの粗い出発点として重要な内容だ。後に「ニュー・ウェイヴ・オブ・アメリカン・ヘヴィ・メタル」を牽引するバンドの、その原型がここにある。力強い一枚である。

New American Gospel is a work on which LAMB OF GOD pushed up Randy Blythe’s roar with hard-chugging guitar and irregular rhythm. The songs have a hardcore-like urgency, and the young band’s aggression becomes sound as-is. It is the effective debut, released after changing the band name from Burn the Priest to LAMB OF GOD. On “Black Label,” “The Black Dahlia” and “Pariah,” while valuing impulse over refinement, the strength of the riffs that show the later direction is clear. Songs like “A Warning,” “Confessional” and “Nippon” breathe an early rough appeal too. It is important content as a coarse starting point for modern heavy metal. The prototype of the band that would later lead the “New Wave of American Heavy Metal” is here. It is a powerful record.
