Burn the Priest

『Burn the Priest』は、後にLAMB OF GODとして知られるバンドが、当時のバンド名「バーン・ザ・プリースト」名義で発表したデビュー作だ。強靭なグルーヴを軸に、後の彼らの原型となる荒々しいサウンドを鳴らしている。ハードコアとメタルが交差する、90年代末のアンダーグラウンド・シーンから生まれた一枚である。 まだ荒削りではあるものの、複雑なリフ・ワークと、身体を揺らすグルーヴの萌芽は、この時点で明確に打ち出されている。派手な代表曲だけに耳を奪われず、音の重心やリズムの引っ掛かりを追うと、後のLAMB OF GODへとつながる要素が随所に見えてくる。バンドはヴァージニア州リッチモンドで結成され、当初はインストゥルメンタル中心の実験的なスタイルから出発した。混沌としながらも独創的なリフの応酬に満ちた本作には、後の彼らの萌芽が宿っている。宗教的な含意を持つバンド名が後に商業的な障壁となったことも、改名の一因だったと言われる。彼らの荒々しい出発点として、ファンには興味深い一枚だ。この後、バンドは名称をLAMB OF GODへと改め、シーンの頂点へと駆け上がっていくことになる。彼らの原点を知る上で、重要な意味を持つ一枚だ。

Burn the Priest is the debut that the band later known as LAMB OF GOD released under their then-name "Burn the Priest." Centered on tenacious groove, it sounds the rough sound that would become their prototype. It is a record born from the late-1990s underground scene where hardcore and metal cross. Still rough though it is, the buds of complex riff work and body-swaying groove are clearly put forward at this point. Without letting only the flashy signature songs seize the ear, following the sonic center of gravity and the catch of the rhythm reveals elements throughout that lead to the later LAMB OF GOD. After this, the band would change its name to LAMB OF GOD and climb to the top of the scene. It is a record of important significance for knowing their origin.
